Keith A. Wells Sr.’s Poem

When an old man died in the geriatric ward of a nursing home in North Platte , Nebraska , it was believed that he had nothing left of any value
Later, when the nurses were going through his meager possessions, they found this poem . Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital
One nurse took her copy to Missouri. The old man’s sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the Christmas edition of the News Magazine of the St. Louis Association for Mental Health. A slide presentation has also been made based on his simple, but eloquent, poem.
And this little old man, with nothing left to give to the world, is now the author of this ‘anonymous’ poem winging across the Internet.

Crabby Old Man
What do you see nurses? . . What do you see?
What are you thinking . . . . . when you’re looking at me?
A crabby old man, . … .. not very wise,
Uncertain of habit .. . .. . . . . . with faraway eyes?

Who dribbles his food . . .. . . . . and makes no reply .
When you say in a loud voice .. . . . .. ‘I do wish you’d try!’
Who seems not to notice . … . the things that you do .
And forever is losing . . . . .. . . . . . A sock or shoe?

Who, resisting or not . . . . . . .. . . lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding The long day to fill?
Is that what you’re thinking? Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse . . . . . you’re not looking at me .

I’ll tell you who I am . As I sit here so still,
As I do at your bidding, . . . . . . as I eat at your will.
I’m a small child of Ten … . . . . . with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters . . . … . . . . . who love one another.

A young boy of Sixteen . . with wings on his feet
Dreaming that soon now . . . .. .. . . a lover he’ll meet..
A groom soon at Twenty . my heart gives a leap.
Remembering, the vows . . . . .. . that I promised to keep.

At Twenty-Five, now . . . . . . . . I have young of my own.
Who need me to guide . . . . And a secure happy home.
A man of Thirty . . . . .. . . . .. My young now grown fast,
Bound to each other . . . . . . . With ties that should last.

At Forty, my young sons .. . have grown and are gone,
But my woman’s beside me . . . . . . . to see I don’t mourn.
At Fifty, once more, babies play ’round my knee,
Again, we know children . . . . . . . My loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me . . my wife is now dead.
I look at the future … . .. . . . . . . shudder with dread..
For my young are all rearing . . . . . .. young of their own.
And I think of the years . . .. and the love that I’ve known.

I’m now an old man . . . . . .. .. . . and nature is cruel.
Tis jest to make old age . . . . look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles .. . . . . . . grace and vigor, depart..
There is now a stone . . . .. . . . where I once had a heart.

But inside this old carcass . . a young guy still dwells,
And now and again . . . .. . . . my battered heart swells.
I remember the joys . . . . . . . . .. I remember the pain.
And I’m loving and living . . . . . .. . . . . life over again.

I think of the years, all too few . . . . . gone too fast.
And accept the stark fact . . . . . .. that nothing can last.
So open your eyes, people . . . . . . . . open and see.
Not a crabby old man. Look closer . . . see ME!!

Remember this poem when you next meet an older person who you might brush aside without looking at the young soul within . . . . we will all, one day, be there, too!

PLEASE SHARE THIS POEM
The best and most beautiful things of this world can’t be seen or touched. They must be felt by the heart.

“So, with all the kindness I can muster, I give this one piece of advice to the next pop star who is asked to sing the national anthem at a sporting event: save the vocal gymnastics and the physical gyrations for your concerts. Just sing this song the way you were taught to sing it in kindergarten — straight up, no styling. Sing it with the constant awareness that there are soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines watching you from bases and outposts all over the world. Don’t make them cringe with your self-centered ego gratification. Sing it as if you are standing before a row of 86-year-old WWII vets wearing their Purple Hearts, Silver Stars and flag pins on their cardigans and you want them to be proud of you for honoring them and the country they love — not because you want them to think you are a superstar musician. They could see that from the costumes, the makeup and the entourages. Sing “The Star Spangled Banner” with the courtesy and humility that tells the audience that it is about America , not you.”

I have good news and bad news – depending on how you feel about cold and snow. Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow which I’m told means six more weeks of winter. Good or bad, it hasn’t been much of a winter so far so when you think about it, we’re really ahead of the game. As for me, I don’t usually start thinking about spring till mid March. Besides, I hope to get one or two more “snow days” in before then.

Don’t forget our annual Valentine’s Auction is taking place this Thursday, February 9th at the Gibson center. The live auction will include a week long trip thru RCI and another thru INTERVAL INTERNATIONAL– anywhere in the world! We have also been most fortunate to receive some wonderful donations from Zeb’s, R & R Woodworkers, our local ski areas as well as some very generous local artists. The cost is still $10 per person which includes a wonderful hors d’oeuvres buffet, a silent auction loaded with wonderful items, a live auction with even more great items, a cash bar and a really terrific time. Reservations are suggested so please call 356-3231. This is a major fund raiser for theGibsonCenter so we hope you will mark your calendars and join us that evening.

Have a wonderful week and God bless!

January 27, 2012

I was listening to the local news this morning and they claimed that folks who have Direct TV might end up missing the Super Bowl due to a disagreement between Direct TV and the corporation that owns the station carrying the game. This would not be a major issue in my life but for many ardent football fans it’s a whole different story. Heaven help the executives at Direct TV if they don’t find a solution. Good luck gentlemen!

As I already mentioned, our annual Valentine’s Auction is coming up on Thursday, February 9th. We’ve received some wonderful donations from our local businesses and everyone here at Gibson wants them to know how grateful we all are for their generosity. The live auction will include a week long trip thru RCI and another thru INTERVAL INTERNATIONAL– anywhere in the world! R&R Woodworkers has once again donated a beautiful large Adirondack Rocking Chair. The ski areas have donated lift tickets, and the local restaurants have offered dozens of gift certificates. Local artists have donated small and large pieces. We have gift baskets from Zeb’s, as well as several baskets filled with tasty international flavors. The cost is still $10 per person which includes a wonderful hors d’oeuvres buffet, a silent auction loaded with wonderful items, a live auction with even more great items, a cash bar and a really terrific time. Reservations are suggested so please call 356-3231. Mark your calendars. We look forward to seeing you there.

I also want to remind everyone that if your closets or bureaus are getting a little cluttered you might want to consider donating your slightly used clothing to our Carriage Thrift Shop. All proceeds from the sale of those items benefit theGibsonCenter. I have one final note to anyone that may have donated their used movie videos to the center. We discovered a home video of someone’s family gatherings mixed in with the regular videos. If you think this is yours, please contact Jill at 356-3231. Be sure to check the calendar of events below for other upcoming events and programs. Have a great week and God bless.

Eight

Four

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We watch the ball drop in Times Square. The band plays “Auld Lang Syne”. People raise glasses of eggnog, or champagne, and hug and kiss, and wish each other the best for the New Year.

Sometimes the Best that we wish for each other may include things that we can change ourselves. Of course it is important to remember that we can only change ourselves, we cannot change others, they must decide to do that themselves. When we decide to make changes, (and new beginnings, like birthdays, and new years are times we especially look back on and evaluate our lives) we resolve to do the best we can. We resolve to eat healthier, exercise more, and stop unhealthy habits. We sometimes look beyond the physical things and examining our behaviors, our thoughts, and our attitudes. Then resolutions can be things like thinking before speaking, developing a positive attitude, or saying nice things only.

When making resolutions, (New Years or otherwise) it is best to start with a goal. Break the goal down into small easily achievable steps, and then reward yourself every time a small step is achieved. It is important not to beat yourself up if you “fall off the wagon”. Loading on guilt makes it harder to start again. While it is easier to start a new regime on a certain date, like New Years Day, EVERY Day is a new day. (In twelve step programs they say “One Day at a Time”).

Some people find it helpful to have a friend to act as a buddy when starting, or ending a new habit. Others find keeping a journal keeps them on track. For some things, like changing an attitude, it is hard to keep track of changes because there is not physical evidence. At times like this one may be able to adopt a concrete habit to help the attitude. Some thing like counting to ten before speaking if you have a quick and deadly tongue, or starting an Gratitude Journal (where you write down 5 things a day for which you are grateful) if you want to improve your attitude or be more positive.

The most important things to remember when starting a new habit are:

Start small

Don’t beat yourself up for lapses

Find a way to keep track of changes

Find a support system

Keep trying!

Good Luck, and may you have a Happy and Healthy 2012

May this New Year be blessed with peace and harmony for you, your families and friends.

Holidays: when they don’t live up to our expectations. From an early age, we learn that the holidays can be stressful, and perhaps disappointing. Santa did not bring us the toy we asked for, someone let us down, we don’t have a new dress like everyone else, or we sing at the wrong time in the Christmas concert. Now, as adults we face more potential stress. Our family members have new families, and spend less time with us. Our family members come to visit and spend more time with us. We don’t have the energy, or money, or time to purchase, wrap, and mail every gift to every person that is meaningful to us. Also memories of the past, and losses, are magnified at this time of year. What can we do to live through the holidays, and perhaps even enjoy them? Change Expectations: Find realistic and meaningful ways to share with others. Spread it through the year, and don’t wait for the holidays. Set price limits and don’t feel guilty for sticking to them. Perhaps have a Yankee Swap or draw a name of one person rather then buying for all people in a group. Spend quality time with loved ones. I recently read about a “Bob Hope Christmas”. Bob was always overseas visiting the troops, so he never had a Christmas at home with his family. Perhaps, with growing families, choosing a different day to celebrate puts less stress on people, so they don’t have to drive all over on the special day, but can spend quality time with people throughout the whole season. Some people only send cards to people that live “away” rather then to everyone in their address books. I have also received a wonderful email card, with photos, and a brief newsy note. It was less time and financially consuming then the snail mail, yet still was touching. If you are experiencing a recent loss, this might be the year to start a new tradition. Old familiar traditions only emphasize the loss. Some families go on a trip, spending time with those still here. Some volunteer at churches or soup kitchens, in memory of the person. Some people make a donation of money, or a commitment in honor of another person. Some people write favorite memories in a book form, to share with others. Or pass a letter around, with each person sharing his or her memories. Some write letters to their loved one. The big thing is to be sure you do not beat yourself up for experiencing emotions (good or bad) over the holidays. Happy New Year
