<p align="center"><b>May 9, 2013</b></p>
<p>Did you ever know someone that could walk into a room full of strangers and leave hours later with a room full of new friends?  That was my mom.  She truly enjoyed being with people and learning all about them.  One time on the bus from Boston she arrived in Conway with a fairly complete life history of the girl who had sat next to her.  She made people feel comfortable and as a result, they felt free to tell her things.  My mom has been gone for a number of years now but her smile has stayed with me.  To all the mothers, grandmothers, and aunts out there, Happy Mother’s Day!                           </p>
<p>Our annual Memorial Day Craft Fair is coming up on May 25th and 26th.  We have many wonderful craftsmen signed up for this two day event and we hope you can join us.  These crafters come from areas all over New England as well as a number of our own outstanding local dealers.  There will be a wide selection of items on sale including fine jewelry, pottery, art, Adirondack chairs, gourmet specialty foods, fudge, baked goods, photography and much more.  Street parking is readily available or park in the town lot adjacent to the center and simply stroll over to the Gibson front lawn.  It’s a fun time and a great way to support the center. </p>

<p><b> </b>A heartfelt and very grateful “Thank You” to all those who contributed in any way to a successful and fun-filled Feinstein Challenge benefitting the Gibson Nutrition Program, both Meals on Wheels and Congregate meals. We exceeded all expectations because of the faithful commitment of not only our participants, but other donors, individuals, businesses, both known and anonymous, from this community and beyond.</p>
<p>We were heartened that our attendees, with much enthusiasm and generosity, assumed an integral role in this fundraising effort through raffles of homemade baked goods, sweets donated from a local business, and other gifts. Through this grass roots effort, we know we can sustain a vibrant program, maintaining our mission to support senior wellness and independence, as we face the economic and political challenges ahead.</p>

<p align="center"><b>April 19, 2013</b></p>
<p align="center">Well, I didn’t get my snow day last Friday but I must say the ride home that afternoon was interesting.  When I saw ice forming on the trees in front of the center, I decided to leave work early.  There was a good inch of slush on the road but by the time I got to Conway, it was snowing.  I pulled into our driveway, looked around at the snow covered trees and suddenly remembered that old saying, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em”.  I plugged in the Christmas lights on the tree out front and went inside to light the woodstove.  Happy Spring!!</p>
<p>There are less than two weeks left in April so I do want to say that if you haven’t had the opportunity yet, there is still time to make a donation to the Feinstein Challenge.  This year our nutrition program is being challenged with the threat of federal and state cuts which means your donations are more important than ever.  We want to ensure our seniors ongoing food security and independence at home and hope you will join us in that endeavor. </p>
<p>Please remember there will be a World Book Night here on Tuesday, April 23rd.  The women from Altrusa are providing free copies of the book <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Girl with the Pearl Earring</span> and their only request is that you pass it on when you are done.  A reading group will then meet here on May 16th to discuss the book.  Hope you will join them.  Be sure to check the schedule below for all the upcoming programs and trips here at Gibson.</p>
<p>Take care, have a wonderful week, and God bless!</p>

<p align="center">Welcome to New England!!  Tomorrow is the second week in April and they’re forecasting snow and sleet.  Like everyone else here at Gibson, I was a bit disappointed.  After all, it’s spring.  I was raking the yard just the other day, trees were budding and plants were popping out of the ground but then I got to thinking……. a Friday snow day.  It’s like the perfect storm.  Maybe Mother Nature has just one more “snow day” for us.  Hmmmmmm.</p>

<p align="center"><b>March 14, 2013</b></p>
<p> Do you remember the TV show “Perry Mason”?  I frequently watched that show because I knew, no matter what the case was, Perry would get the “bad guy” in the end.  That doesn’t happen much in today’s TV programs.  Somewhere down the line, program executives decided television needed to be more <span style="text-decoration: underline;">realistic</span> so now the murderer gets off on a technicality or the villain escapes.  Maybe it’s just me but I disagree.  I want the bad guys caught and the good guy to win.  Television should be entertaining and fun.  I figure if you want reality you can always watch the news or read a paper.  Incidentally, don’t let them fool you.  Those reality shows on TV today……. they’re not real.  Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!</p>
<p> We had a wonderful turn out this week for our St. Patrick’s Day luncheons.  Rick was away but David did a great job preparing the food assisted by Cathy &amp; Jim.  The corned beef &amp; cabbage was spectacular.  Thank you, guys.  We have another holiday luncheon coming up for Easter at the end of the month.  We’ll be serving our famous baked black oak ham and it’s a meal you won’t want to miss.  Please remember our holiday luncheons require reservations so call 356-3231 to reserve your seat.    </p>

February 22, 2013<br />
I hear there is another snow storm headed our way this weekend. Skiers are overjoyed and I –as usual – have my fingers crossed for a snow day. The timing of this storm doesn’t look good for that but one can always hope. If you (like some people I know) prefer sun to snow I might have pointed out that you are probably living in the wrong part of the country. I say might have because our receptionist, Penny showed me a picture her brother emailed her this morning from Phoenix, Arizona. It was snowing! Have a good day and stay warm.</p>
<p>Jill has an interesting program on Memory &amp; Tips to Remember More taking place this Thursday February 28th. The program sponsored by REAP (Referral Education Assistance &amp; Prevention program) begins at 12:30 in the activity room and is open to the public. We hope you can join us.</p>
<p>On February 26th, the OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) will have an open house at Granite State College in Conway to preview the classes they will be offering in our area this spring. <p>For all you cat lovers out there, I hope you missed the news that came out the other day regarding our feline friends.  It appears that all that purring, cuddling and chasing their tails was just a rouse.  A newly realized study states that cats kill one to three billion birds every year.  Now I knew cats enjoyed going after birds but I was truly amazed at this high a number.  I was even worried that at this rate those feline murderers would eventually wipe out our fine feathered friends.   Oh yes, I was getting really nervous ……..until I discovered that those billions represented only 15% of the total bird population.  Remember Hitchcock’s movie “The Birds”??  Maybe those cats know something we don’t. </p>
<p>The community has responded enthusiastically to our silent and live auction which is taking place this Thursday evening, February 7th. We have 100 gallons of oil, art, Valley Originals gift certificates, hairdos, ski tickets, car items, R&amp;R Woodworkers has again donated one of their amazingAdirondackrocking chairs, as well as a wide assortments of “can’t live without stuff”. We also have a one week stay at any Interval International resort on the entire planet so plan your getaway now!  This is our Fourteenth Annual Auction here at the center.  The cost to attend is still $10 per person.  The silent auction begins at 5:30 followed by the live auction with our very ownGeorge Clevelandacting as auctioneer.  Once againRick Spencerand his talented kitchen staff will present their now famous and delectable hors d’oeuvres buffet – something you won’t want to miss.  Local businesses and craftsmen have been most generous.  This event is a major fundraiser for theGibsonCenterso we hope you will mark your calendars and join us for a fun-filled evening.  Reservations are suggested so please call 356-3231.  Hope to see you there.  Be sure to take a moment to check the schedule below for upcoming programs and trips here at Gibson.  Take care, have a wonderful week, and God bless!</p>

<p>I’m feeling a bit guilty today.  Last year at this time I made a little joke about the consistently sunny, warm weather out in California and how boring it must be for all those folks to have the same warm temperatures all the time.  Apparently, warm weather has not been an issue for them over the last week or two.  I’m afraid I may have jinxed them.  Sorry!</p>
<p>Cold or not, everyone here at Gibson is hoping for some nice weather on Thursday, February 7th.  That’s the day we will be holding our Fourteenth Annual Auction here at the center.  The cost to attend is still $10 per person.  The silent auction begins at 5:30 followed by the live auction with our very own George Cleveland acting as auctioneer.  Once again Rick Spencer and his talented kitchen staff will present their now famous and delectable hors d’oeuvres buffet – something you won’t want to miss.  Local businesses and craftsmen have been most generous and Karen has received some wonderful donations including lift tickets to some favorite ski areas and gift certificates to numerous valley restaurants.  R&amp;R Woodworkers has again donated one of their amazing Adirondack rocking chairs and several local artists have donated some outstanding handcrafted pieces.  This event is a major fundraiser for the Gibson Center so we hope you will mark your calendars and join us for a fun-filled evening.  Reservations are suggested so please call 356-3231.  Hope to see you there.  Be sure to take a moment to check the schedule below for upcoming programs and trips here at Gibson.  Take care, have a wonderful week, and God bless!</p>

<p align="center">December 21, 2012</p>
<p> I remember how at the age of six or seven, the wait for Christmas seemed endless.  My anticipation was boundless and there were days I thought it might never come.  Over the years however, that changed.  These days I go to bed after a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner and wake up to discover it’s Christmas Eve.  My mother always told me, “The older you get, the faster time goes”.  Never was a truer word spoken.  Whatever your plans might be this Christmas, we wish you well and hope you have a safe and happy one.  Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!</p>
<p>I know all the Christmas carols that were being played on the radio will stop on the 26th but remember that December 26th is in fact the first day of Christmas with eleven more days to follow.  On Friday the 28th David Lloyd will provide a special musical program in the dining room right after lunch.  On Friday January 4th, we’ll celebrate the end of the season with a “12 Days of Christmas” party.  The party will include a drawing for twelve door prizes and we’ll also have a chance to sing “the song”.  We hope you can join us.</p>
