Frequently Asked Questions

1. How long have we been doing this?

The Gibson Center has been providing meals for seniors since 7979!!

Providing excellent and well-balanced meals has been the core and cornerstone of The Gibson Center since our founding in 1979. Our entire kitchen staff has extensive restaurant and food service experience. Our meals are great. Period.

2. Do You have to be 60?

Our mission is to serve a daily nutritious meal to homebound individuals, who are at least sixty years old, who, because of health challenges, are unable to prepare proper meals. We also offer this service to younger disabled adults who must also meet income guidelines and are under a physicians care.

3. Do I Get a Meal Every Day?

Volunteer drivers on seven routes deliver hot meals between 9:00 AM and 12:00 noon Monday thru Friday. Frozen weekend dinners for those requesting them are delivered on Thursday, but in some cases may be delivered another day. Frozen meals, to make up for holidays and storm days, are also distributed. “Blizzard Packs”, consisting of shelf-stable food, are also provided during the winter months when inclement weather prevents our volunteers from delivering.

4.  What if I can’t eat what you’re serving or have a dietary restriction?

We work very hard to ensure that your meals meet the daily recommended allowances for senior citizens as given in the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans. However, if there are specific requirements, such as allergies or restrictions as recommended by a physician, we can make adjustments to the way meals are served in order to better accommodate this.

5. Do I have to take a meal everyday?

No, your delivery schedule can be tailored to your specific needs.

6. Do I have to be home to get the meal when the meal is delivered?

Individuals receiving home delivered meals should be home-bound. However, we know that there may be extenuating circumstances or life-events that occur when you may not be able to be there however, we ask for advance notice whenever possible.

7.  What happens if I am not home, and I didn’t notify you ahead of time?

if for some reason you aren’t home, and we didn’t know about it ahead of time, we do have a protocol to follow. The driver delivering your meal would try to call your phone, and if you didn’t answer them, they would call into the office immediately to initiate the protocol. The office staff would then try to contact you, your emergency contact, and all other avenues available to us and then if no contact had been made, a call would be placed to your local police department for a wellness check to your listed address.

8.  Do you deliver in bad weather?

It is our policy to deliver Meals on Wheels only when it is generally safe to be traveling on the roads. Management of the Gibson Center determines as early as possible in the morning if we will be delivering meals that day. Generally, our closing does not mirror SAU 9 decisions, our decision is independent of theirs and has differed at times, based on different operating hours and conditions. When we close delivery operations, the announcement will be made on 93.5 FM WMWV as soon as practicable

9.  What do I do if I have a problem with my meal/driver?

Clients should feel free to discuss any grievance without fear of retribution or prejudice. There shall be no adverse action taken against any client who files a grievance or anyone who accompanies them. Confidentiality will be respected. Please feel free to call the Nutrition office for any issues at 603-356-3231.

10. Is there a cost?

There is no cost associated with home delivered meals. It is donation based only. Once a week, an envelope will be sent to your home with a meal. There is a suggested donation amount of $3.00 per meal. We do not track donations.
